Champions League: PSG star Vitinha rejects 'favourites' tag in Liverpool clash

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha says that despite Liverpool's travails in the English Premier League, he expects a difficult game against Liverpool in the Champions League. AFP - FRANCK FIFE

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha played down his side's billing as favourites to advance from the Champions League quarter-final showdowns with Liverpool.

The 26-year-old, a key member of the team that swept to the 2025 Champions League trophy, refused to underestimate Arne Slot's side who were battered 4-0 on Saturday at Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

"Everyone knows football well enough to know that in this sort of game there is no favourite," said the Portugal international on the eve of the first leg of the tie at the Parc des Princes in Paris

"It's Liverpool, a great team with great players, anything can happen," he added. "There are two big games to play, at the Parc des Princes and at Anfield.

"We know we'll be at 100 percent and one thing is certain: we'll play to win the game, because that's what we want to do every time."

PSG beat Liverpool in the last-16 during their surge to the 2025 Champions League final last May in Munich against Inter Milan.

During the final, Vitinha bossed the midfield with compatriot Joao Neves and the Spain international Fabian Ruiz.

In the 12th minute of the final, Vitinha slid the ball into the Inter penalty area to Désiré Doué who squared it for Achraf Hakimi to open the scoring.

In the 73rd minute, Vitinha played a slick one-two with Ousmane Dembélé before advancing with the ball to set up Doué to bag his second of the night and put PSG 3-0 up.

PSG scored two more to register the biggest winning margin in the final in the 69-year history of the European Cup and its rebranding as the Champions League in 1992.

"The spirit in the camp is incredible," said Vitinha. "We love playing this kind of game, these big Champions League matches. They're the sort of game every footballer wants to play. We're focused and we're aware of the danger."

And then there were 48 ... how the World Cup has expanded since 1930

After the defeat to PSG in the last-16, Liverpool went on to claim England's Premier League title.

This year, they arrive in Paris struggling to secure one of the berths in the English top flight that will lead to a place in the 2026/2027 Champions League.

"I don't look at where we are in the season that much," said Slot. "I just look at the challenge itself.

"Manchester City and PSG are quite comparable because of the quality they have and the style of play they want to have.

"We can never take a quarter-final of the Champions League for granted, let alone if you face the champions of Europe that fully deserved to win last season and who are again doing very well this season."

Following Wednesday night's game, Liverpool will entertain Fulham at Anfield on Saturday night in the Premier League while French football chiefs have, despite the protestations of Lens, postponed PSG's Ligue 1 fixture at Lens to allow PSG more time to prepare for the Champions League second leg in Liverpool on 14 April.

Wednesday night's other first leg match pits Barcelona against Atletico Madrid.

In Tuesday night's Champions League first leg ties, France skipper Kylian Mbappé scored for Real Madrid in the 2-1 defeat at home to Bayern Munich.

And Kai Havertz struck in second-half stoppage time to give Arsenal a 1-0 win at Sporting.
