Champions League group stage draw date, time and pots for Chelsea and Tottenham

Champions League football is back for the 2022/23 campaign, with the biggest teams in Europe set to find out their opponents when the draw for the group stage takes place.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will both be hoping for favourable draws in order to progress to the knock-out stages - much like their fellow Premier League sides Liverpool and Manchester City.

Thomas Tuchel's team exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage last season after losing to Real Madrid, while Antonio Conte's Spurs side were eliminated from the Europa Conference League after UEFA ruled their postponed fixture against Rennes would be deemed as a forfeit.

Both sides finished inside the top four last season and will be hoping for European glory at the end of the season.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Champions League group stage draw...

When is the draw?

The 2022/23 Champions League group stage draw will take place on 25 August in Istanbul, Turkey. It will be streamed live from 4pm on BT Sport in the UK, with previous draws having been available to watch for free on YouTube.

How will the group stage draw work?

There will be 32 teams in the pot, 26 of whom qualified for the group stage automatically and six play-off winners, whose identity will be confirmed on 23 and 24 August.

Before the draw takes place, teams are then split into four seeding pots.

In pot 1 will be the holders (Real Madrid), Europa League winners (Eintracht Frankfurt) and the winners of the six highest ranked national leagues, who did not win either the Champions League or the Europa League.

Then, pots 2-4 are based on club coefficient rankings (past performances in UEFA competitions).

From there, each group will draw a team from each pot.

Are there any stipulations?

No club can draw a team from their own association. For example, Chelsea and Spurs could not be drawn in the same group.
