Challenger in jail, all quiet in hot seat

AMRITSAR: The hottest contest of the 2022 Punjab assembly elections was fought in Amritsar East constituency, between former SAD minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Cut to Thursday, Majithia will be behind bars when the result will be announced, while Sidhu is expected to be in Chandigarh by the evening for chairing a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party.

SAD Amritsar district (urban) president Gurpartap Singh Tikka said they held a meeting with Akali activists and assigned duties to counting agents. He said Majithia’s election team was experienced and expressed hope everything would go smoothly at Amritsar East and also Majitha, from where Majithia’s wife, Ganive Kaur, is contesting elections.

Majithia had contested 2007, 2012 and 2017 elections from Majitha. On Wednesday, Sidhu held a meeting with his supporters and assigned duties to counting agents. Sidhu kept a distance from media, but tweeted: “It has been decided that the first Congress Legislative Party meeting will be held at PPCC office at 5pm on March 10. All newly elected @INCPunjab MLAs are requested to attend it. ”

Majithia: Lift ban on jail visitations

SAD MLA Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday urged the Punjab govt to lift the ban on personal meetings in state prisons for convicts and undertrials in view of the end of Covid curbs in other spheres of public life. Majithia, who is in Patiala central jail in a drugs case, has written a letter to chief secretary Anirudh Tewari, principal secretary and ADGP of jails department.

He said it had come to his notice that convicts and undertrials had been denied visitation rights since the start of pandemic. He said this concerned their fundamental rights.
