Shocking scenes unfolded in Newport on Saturday, February 4, when chairs were hurled at people when a fight broke out following Newport County v Swindon Town. CCTV obtained by WalesOnline shows outdoor bar chairs and stools being thrown and items lobbed as the incident escalates in the city centre, with some chairs hitting as high as outdoor canopy shelters.
Onlookers reported clashes between rival fans in Newport. County had beaten Swindon Town 2-1 on Saturday. Bar staff can be seen in the footage trying to remove outdoor furniture from the reach of those throwing them with police entering the footage as they bid to put an end to the incident.
Gwent Police superintendent Vicki Townsend said: “Officers were present on matchday to ensure the safety of everyone visiting Newport city – whether for the Newport County football game or for other activities. While many people enjoyed matchday responsibly, safely, and sensibly others acted irresponsibly and in an unacceptable manner.
“Following final whistle we attended a disturbance outside Bar Amber. No injuries or damage were reported and a man was arrested on suspicion of affray. We want thank everyone who visited and enjoyed themselves in a considerate and sensible manner and to remind anyone caught committing a criminal offence or acting in an anti-social way will be prosecuted.”
During the day five arrests were made in total for alleged public order and assault offences.
