Ceri Holland makes Liverpool vow and outlines Women's Super League aim

Liverpool midfielder Ceri Holland has insisted the Reds won't take their Women's Super League survival for granted despite Sunday's huge win over Brighton.

The Seagulls took the lead 39 minutes into the contest at Prenton Park thanks to an audacious long-range effort from Elisabeth Terland. However, Liverpool turned in a much-improved display in the second half, with Holland netting twice in the space of 15 minutes to help the Reds claim all three points.

The victory saw Liverpool leapfrog West Ham to move up to seventh in the table, with Matt Beard's side now nine points above the drop zone with just five games left to play. While they are not yet statistically safe, the Reds look almost certain to retain their top flight status beyond the end of this season, but Holland maintains that there is still plenty to play for in the coming weeks.

“I think we’ll never take anything for granted in this league," the midfielder told the ECHO.

"It’s very competitive and you can see the teams below are picking up points. We just have to focus on ourselves.

"Beardy says that every single week, that we have to focus on us and play with freedom and confidence. We’ve shown that we’re good enough to be competitive in this league, and to finish in that middle group would be a really successful season for us after being promoted."

Holland has been a standout performer for the Reds this term and has notched four goals in her last five appearances at Prenton Park. Reflecting on her own personal form, the Wales international added: “I enjoy scoring goals here in front of our fans and they were fantastic again [on Sunday].

"It’s obviously a massive win, you could see that at the end of the game. It’s a massive three points in terms of our safety in this league.

“At half time there were a couple of things we thought we could do better at and we came out and improved them in the second half. We played with a little bit more freedom and momentum going forwards and both of the goals came from that."

She added: "The first goal was a bit of a fluke I’ll admit but it was nice to see it going into the back of the net. The second one was a fantastic ball over the top from Jas [Matthews] and I just managed to put it in the back of the net."

Liverpool will return to WSL action against relegation favourites Leicester next Saturday. The Foxes came out on top when they travelled to Prenton Park in March and will be hoping for the same outcome when Matt Beard's side travel to the King Power.
