A former chief executive of the Co-op who helped rebuilt the group following its banking crisis has landed a new role.

Former Carr's Group chief financial officer Neil Austin has also become CFO of the firm, according to new filings with Companies House.

The appointments come after Henry Dimbleby, a co-founder of Leon Restaurants, joined as a non-executive director in September 2022.

Mr Dimbleby, who is the son of veteran BBC broadcaster David Dimbleby, founded Leon with John Vincent and Allegra McEvedy before it was sold to the billionaire Issa brothers in April 2021.

Mr Pennycook was named as CEO of the Co-op in 2014 having previously served as its CFO.

At the time he was also the chairman of Manchester-based online retailer The Hut Group, which is now known as THG.

Mr Pennycook was a key figure in saving the Co-op, which is headquartered in Manchester, from collapse after the financial problems of the Co-operative Bank. He left in 2017 and was succeeded by Steve Murrells.

Mr Pennycook is also currently the chairman of On The Beach and Boparan Holdings.

According to the company's most recently filed accounts, for the 12 months to June 27, 2021, its turnover fell from £83.4m to £76.8m while its pre-tax profits went from £2.6m to £2.3m.

Westmorland's latest set of accounts, for the 12 months to June 30, 2022, are expected to be published by the end of March.
