A supplier of fuel for nuclear power plants, Centrus Energy, has announced a $60 million expansion at its facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The expansion aims to resume and grow the manufacturing of high-tech centrifuges used for enriching uranium at its facility in Piketon, Ohio. This move comes as the U.S. increases its reliance on nuclear power as a solution to combat climate change.
The Tennessee facility, spanning 440,000 square feet, is where Centrus Energy produces and tests 40-foot-high centrifuges that will be transported to the enrichment facility in Ohio. The company recently provided a tour of the facility, showcasing the centrifuges while keeping other classified equipment covered.
