Eastern Kentucky University just received millions in federal funding from the Fiscal Year 2024 Community Project Funding process.
Congressman Andy Barr announced EKU was awarded $3.5 million dollars for the Central Kentucky Regional Airport. This is where students in the university's aviation program get hands-on experience flying aircraft.
The funds will be used to construct a general aviation terminal to accommodate growing demands of the airport. EKU president David McFaddin said the airport plays a crucial role in meeting the needs of the community's academic and economic needs. EKU has the only 4-year aviation program in Kentucky.
Berea Mayor Bruce Fraley said the airport is a unique example of interlocal cooperation between Madison County Fiscal Court, Eastern Kentucky University, the City of Richmond and his City of Berea.
