Central Kentucky’s best-known agency for meeting hunger head-on along with hundreds of volunteers is working to see a Thanksgiving table ripe with traditional food items in thousands of households.
It was two-way grocery cart travel at Southland Christian Church as Thanksgiving food items were loaded into cars. This is the 30th annual Sharing Thanksgiving program at God’s Pantry. Executive Director Mike Halligan.
“The process started last February when we ordered 7000 turkeys and throughout the spring and summer we were ordering all the fixins that go with those turkeys,” said Halligan.
Halligan said the referral process started in August to identify the 7000 households in Lexington as well as eastern Kentucky's Laurel, Floyd, Lewis, and Rowan Counties. He said it provides food for eight with leftovers.
“So, it’s a very generous, as it should be for Thanksgiving, a very generous quantity of food to ensure that folks are nourished..so they can thrive..so they can gather around a Thanksgiving table with loved ones and friends,” said Halligan.
Mike Wright volunteered to help with egg placement. He noted it’s rare to experience a lack of volunteers with this and other projects for those in need.
“You know I’ve lived in different parts of the country and Lexington is one of the most giving areas I’ve ever been in. People give time, they give money. It’s just….everybody cares here, yeah, yeah. It’s a great city,” said Wright.
On Saturday, Mike Halligan said hundreds of food boxes were taken by car in eastern Kentucky to those without transportation. He said agencies in Lexington have picked up food to deliver to families in the central Kentucky community.
