The thing about NBA nicknames is that they are almost always organic in terms of their origin — and pinning down where exactly that origin was from can often be well nigh impossible to pinpoint. And such is the case for Boston Celtics reserve big man Luke Kornet and his popular “Green Kornet” nickname per a recent article on the topic by Boston Dot Com’s Luke Scotchie.
When asked about the origins of his superhero-inspired alter-ego, the player admitted that he’s uncertain. “The Green Kornet, that just sort of happened when I got traded,” explained the Vanderbilt alum on his understanding of his nickname’s origin story. “I honestly don’t even know (where the appellation came from).”
Kornet believes the nickname may have been coined by Celtics analyst and former player Brian Scalabrine and likely draws inspiration from the superhero character “Green Hornet.”

“People don’t really call me that, at least not in our organization commonly,” Kornet admitted.
In the press and on social media, however, Kornet’s nickname is not just visible, but a common sight when the 7-footer is doing good things on the court — and with his play ticking up as the 2023-24 season progresses, the Green Kornet rides again.
At least on the platform formerly known as Twitter, anyway.
