For many in the NBA community, Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell was more than just a sports hero and civil rights legend. Active in the league’s wider community for decades after leaving the game as a player and a coach, Russell maintained close ties to many players and other figures around the league as a mentor and a friend.
One such figure is fellow Celtics alumnus and Boston champion Cedric Maxwell, who shared his thoughts on his friend’s passing in a short clip he circulated on CLNS Media this past Sunday afternoon on learning of Russell’s death.
Watch the clip embedded below to hear what one Celtics legend had to say about another, and just how important Russell’s legacy is to us all as not only the greatest winner in sports history but among the most indefatigable fighters for justice of the last century.
