Celtic 'virtual pitch' offer ruthlessly trolled by leading football finance expert

Celtic’s scheme to sell virtual sections of the Parkhead pitch to fans has been mocked by football finance expert Kieran Maguire in a heavily sarcastic social media post.

Many supporters were left baffled last week when the club announced its partnership with Sportli, offering the chance to buy a 'digital' section of the pitch.

Swathes of fans have expressed disdain on social media, with some saying they've filed formal complaints with the club's Supporters Liaison Officer since the announcement was made.

Leading football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who is also a lecturer, author and broadcaster, took to social media on Monday to slam the scheme.

The Price of Football author said on X: “Celtic partner with Sportli to offer fans a chance to own a (very) small part of the Celtic Park pitch digitally for just £29.99 or £49.99 for three years.

“For this sum you get a pdf saying you are the owner and of course your friends will be impressed when you frame it in the toilet.

“In other news I’m offering an online course on how to avoid being taken for a mug on the internet. Just send your details and payment to gullible@gmail.com.

“The first 1,000 enrollers get a 50% discount off the regular price of £499.99.”

Sportli claims the scheme offers supporters an opportunity to claim their "Piece of Paradise",  with a small portion of each purchase going to the Celtic FC Foundation (a reported £1 per plot).
