Celtic transfer news bulletin as Xavier Mbuyamba 'targeted' after firm Virgil van Dijk comparisons

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Xavier Mbuyamba as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his defensive options heading into next season.

The 21-year-old Dutch centre-back has been a stand out for FC Volendam in the Eredivisie this season and could be heading to Parkhead, according to Sky Sports. English championship side Watford are also believed to be interested in his signature. Mbuyamba has been compared to former Celtic centre-back Virgil van Dijk who joined the Hoops from Groningen in 2013 before leaving for Southampton and then onto Liverpool for around £75 million.

Dutch giants Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are also interested in the 6ft 5in defender who has represented The Netherland at under 19 level and is expected to be called up to the under 21 team in the future. Mbuyamba signed a three-year deal with FC Volendam last summer after leaving the Chelsea academy in search of first team football. He has also played in the famous La Masia academy in Barcelona.

Postecoglou will be looking to bolster his squad ahead of the new season with Cameron Carter-Vickers touch and go to make the start of the campaign. While Carl Starfelt has been linked with a move to Europe with English Premier League clubs also believed to be interested in his services.
