Celtic players and staff pay tribute to 'tremendous' Scott Brown as Parkhead icon retires

CELTIC players and staff have paid tribute to Scott Brown after the former Parkhead captain announced his retirement from playing.

The central midfielder, who won 22 trophies during his 14-year spell in Glasgow's east end, departed the club last summer to join Aberdeen as a player-coach before leaving the Pittodrie outfit earlier this year when manager Stephen Glass was sacked.

Brown has been without a club since and officially announced his retirement on Sunday.

Current members of the Celtic team who played and worked alongside Brown thanked the 36-year-old for his contribution in a video released via Celtic's Twitter account.

"Obviously he is a hugely important person to this club and Scotland as a country," said Australia internationalist Tom Rogic.

"He has had an incredible career and I think the amount of games he’s played and the trophies he has won – that alone is super impressive.

"Then you add on top of that the type of character he was, how he led.

"I personally saw that he led by example every day and in every match for such a long period.

"He will certainly be remembered as one of the greats. That’s for sure."

James Forrest said that he learned a lot from working closely alongside Brown for so many years.

The winger said: "Definitely one of the most influential players or managers or anything throughout my career – right from the very start and right until the very end as well.

"It was a pleasure working with him and I learned so much from him as well."

Assistant manager John Kennedy was also quick to heap praise on the midfielder for what he achieved at Celtic.

"Outstanding is probably the thing that springs to mind straight away," Kennedy said. "He has been a huge part of my time here at the club.

"When he came I was still playing and I retired soon afterwards but in terms of who he was and what he became at this club, it’s credit to himself, his family and everyone around him.

"He is a tremendous leader, a tremendous person, and a captain who brought great success to this club.

"It is great to see the career that he has had and we wish him all the best in whatever is next."

Callum McGregor, who replaced Brown as captain last summer, added: "It’s a sad day to see him retire but he retires with a huge legacy behind him – as a football player, as a Celtic player, as a Celtic captain and a Celtic legend.

"I wish him all the best in his next chapter but what a legacy he leaves behind."
