Celtic player ratings v St Johnstone as Bernabei and McCarthy show they can step up for Postecoglou

Celtic edged out a dramatic 2-1 win in their latest Premiership outing against St Johnstone.

The first half was dominated by the Hoops and a similar pattern emerged in the second. In the end there was only one goal separating the sides heading into the final 10 minutes after Sead Haksabanovic's cross into the Saints penalty area was turned into the net by home defender Andy Considine.

There were offside goals too, one at the start of the second half and again when Giakoumakis thought he had the better of Remi Matthews but he was left frustrated when the flag went up. Late despair then turned to joy when as soon as Alex Mitchell levelled for the Perth club two minutes from time, Giakoumakis sparked wild scenes a minute later with a reply. Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou's side have no time for rest as they now look forward to a crucial Champions League Group F matchday four clash with RB Leipzig. Here is how we rated the Celtic players.

Joe Hart - 6

A big error midweek away at Leipzig but showed now signs of that impacting. Pushed a shot onto the post in a big moment, but the goal crept under him.

Anthony Ralston - 6

Came in for Juranovic and didn't do a lot wrong. Got up and down the line particularly in the first half.

Cameron Carter-Vickers - 6

Made his return to the side after injury and seemed to steady the ship as the stand-in captain, although handed away the free-kick from which Saints scored.

Stephen Welsh - 6

Wasn't overly troubled but when St Johnstone when long to the likes of Stevie May, he seemed to struggle in the physical battle. Had similar issues against Motherwell's Kevin van Veen.

Alexandro Bernabei - 8

A very impressive day from the Argentine left-back. Got up and down the left like Ralston but with more attacking intent, putting in a fine cross for Giakoumakis to score.

Matt O'Riley - 7

Conducted the midfield well from his deeper midfield position, playing all but six of his 50 passes accurately. Rested after 68 minutes

Reo Hatate - 8

Played his part in alongside O'Riley and his brilliant football IQ saw him unlock the St Johnstone defence for Haksabanovic. Lead in midfield with captain Callum McGregor out.

Jota - 6

Only given the one half to make an impact as he was hooked at half-time with plenty of matches to come on three fronts, for which he will be crucial.

Sead Haksabanovic - 7

Another of the top Celtic performers. A constant menace and linked up well with Bernabei, while he took the first goal in fine fashion.

Liel Abada - 6

Should have made this a lot comfier for the Hoops but saw Remi Matthews make a big stop. Frustrating afternoon.

Daizen Maeda - 5

Looks low in confidence. All the usual huffing and puffing from the forward but lacked any composure in the final third.

Giorgos Giakoumakis - 7

It looked for all the world it wouldn't be his day. But then he notched home a moment fans in that away end won't forget in a hurry.

Aaron Mooy - 4

Brought on to provide fresh legs but was caught wanting when Mitchell stormed through to head into the net.

Oliver Abilgaard - 4

Another subbed into the game as part of Postecoglou's triple-swap but Giakoumakis saved him from not fulfilling his brief of keeping things under control.

James Forrest - 4

Tried to make things happen on the counter and looked sharper in his cameo.

James McCarthy - 5

An often lamented figure was a huge factor in this match in just eight minutes. His unseen run and tackle played in Bernabei for Giakoumakis' cross. There's a player there yet.
