Celtic snatched a huge Premiership point at Ibrox but Parkhead punters are still angry over a couple of VAR calls.
Hoops fans raged over a Connor Goldson handball call and the Rangers penalty award. But Gers supporters reckon the moans from the other side of the city are a sign the champions are running scared. Michael Emonds, Northampton, said: “Not one Scottish referee at the World Cup tells its own story. They had a worldwide audience at Ibrox and a chance to show their credentials but couldn’t get the two penalty calls right. All John Beaton had to do was check the monitor and show how efficient he is but blew his chances big time. We didn't lose despite playing against 13 in the referee and VAR referee. The Celtic board must start to call this out instead of accepting it.” John Melrose, Edinburgh, said: “This situation has just become utterly ridiculous now and it is glaringly obvious we need foreign officials to take charge of the Glasgow club’s games. The laughable decisions are all in favour of one team and fans of several clubs I work with agree we have a problem with VAR being used for Rangers’ benefit. This cannot go on.” But Alfie Mullin, London, said: “It seems that Celtic fans are running scared of Rangers. They want to go greetin' to UEFA, to get them to help Celtic to win the league.”
Stuart Drive emailed: “First call on the paranoia line is from another Celtic fan complaining about refs. We had the efforts pre-game from a select few complaining before a ball was even kicked. The biggest surprise was the new right back for Celtic escaped a yellow card.”
Celtic were satisfied with the point but Gerry Milligan, Erskine, said: “Ange Postecoglou made some erratic selections and decisions. Forrest and O’Riley had anonymous games, Mooy's exclusion was puzzling and whether Juranovic stays or goes, Bernabei most certainly should have replaced Taylor. After such an early goal with Rangers wobbling we should have gone full thrust.”
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “The draw seemed almost like a victory. “However, Postecoglou thinking that Forrest was a better option than Jota misfired badly and I would certainly like to see Celtic take the option of bringing in Moritz Jenz on a permanent basis. Carl Starfelt reminds me of Bobo Balde, an accident waiting to happen every time he makes a challenge in the penalty box.”
Gers fans are feeling optimistic and Steve Macleod, Wokingham, said: “Rangers recovered from a tough start and rallied to deserve their first league penalty against Celtic in 12 years. “We were close. And we’ll take them next time. No Problem.”
Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, said: “We should have had three points. As Beale says the league is all but gone, and after this result I would sell Morelos and use the money to keep Kent.”
Alan McGaw, Alloa, said: “I was very disappointed with the draw. It’s certainly a step in the right direction for Beale and Rangers, but a long way to go.”
But Alan Milligan, via email, said: “Beale showed his inexperience by trying to protect a lead. Arfield should have come on instead of Sands who is a very poor player.”
Aberdeen are five without a win and Hugh McKirdy emailed: “Aberdeen probably can't afford to sack Jim Goodwin. But disaster in Darvel and a defeat to Rangers in the League Cup could bring about more unsettlement thanks to Dave Cormack and his cronies.”
Kevin Kean, Inchinnan, said: “The poverty of the quality in the Scottish Premiership is borne out by the fact Aberdeen have picked up only one point from 15 and still remain in fourth.”
