Celtic midfielder Kerr McInroy bids to shine in Championship fight at Ayr United

Kerr McInroy admits he knew he'd made the right choice in signing for Ayr United - when his grandad hailed Lee Bullen a LEGEND.

The Scotland under 21 cap tonight became Bullen's fifth signing of the January window at Somerset Park.

And the midfielder reckons his new boss could walk on water with his family.

He told the Ayrshire Post: "My grandad John has been a Dunfermline fan all of his days and speaks really highly of the manager here.

"So when I told him I was coming down the road, he instantly said Lee Bullen was a legend as a player at Dunfermline and is still loved through there.

"Right enough, I think I've made the gaffer feel a bit old by telling him that!"

McInroy, who joins on a six month loan from Celtic, came through the Parkhead youth setup and was their reserve team captain when he suffered a serious knee injury in 2019.

The road to recovery has taken in loan spells at his grandad's beloved Pars and then Airdrie in the first half of this season.

He added: "When I went to Dunfermline, it was just when football had restarted after Covid with no fans and it was a difficult period.

"I probably didn't do as well there as I would have wanted.

"But I've loved my time at Airdrie this season, however I thought the time was right to step up a league and test myself again in the Championship.

"It was tough missing almost a year with the injury but I'm feeling great now and raring to go."

McInroy's form at New Broomfield, in which he bagged four goals in 13 games, earned him rave reviews with the Diamonds.

And that has convinced Ayr to offer him a platform for the remainder of the season.

McInroy, 21, said: "I've been aware of Ayr's interest for a few weeks now.

"I really liked the manager's philosophy on football and he seems a top guy, so it made it an easier decision to come here.

"Graeme [Mathie] has also been keeping in touch, so it was nice to feel wanted that way.

"I had other options but I liked the way the club were speaking to me and made clear how much they wanted me.

"The facilities off the park seem to be taking shape and the club is going in the right direction.

"I like to get on the ball and make things happen and I see this is as a really good place to come and do it.

"The Championship is a crazy league and we have a spell of two games a week coming up, so I'm looking forward to getting in amongst it."

Ayr boss Bullen added: "The midfield has been a key area of the park we needed to address in terms of the imbalance in the squad.

"Kerr will give us real options and competition in there and he's one we've been aware of since the beginning of January.

"He's done really well at Airdrie in the first half of the season and he brings a lot of good quality - he has a hell of a left peg on him and will add a lot to our game."
