Celtic 'left-field' option named in Aberdeen manager hunt by Kris Commons alongside two others

Kris Commons has named the 'left-field' candidate Aberdeen should consider as their next boss following Jim Goodwin's sacking.

The Dons moved swiftly following the 6-0 hammering by Hibs to dismiss their manager, who was under increased pressure following the shock Scottish Cup exit to Darvel. The club released a statement at the time following the defeat to the West of Scotland side saying they were seeking an immediate response from the manager and players. But that heavy defeat in the capital was the final straw with his exit confirmed minutes after the defeat.

The search for a new boss is underway for Dave Cormack with the Scottish Daily Express reporting that Chris Wilder is 'interested' in the vacant post. A host of names will be linked with the Pittodrie vacancy with an important appointment to be made following the unsuccessful periods for Stephen Glass and Jim Goodwin. One man former Celtic midfielder Commons has tipped as an outside shout is Hoops No2 John Kennedy. He also reckons Neil Lennon would be a safe bet but reckons it is an 'unlikely' appointment.

Livingston boss David Martindale is another he named as a potential candidate billing him as an 'interesting' one having worked wonders at the Tony Macaroni Arena. Writing in his Daily Mail column, he said: "Neil Lennon would be a pretty safe pair of hands and he would definitely bring some discipline and organisation to the Aberdeen defence.

"But personal circumstances mean that he’s unable to take the job at this very moment in time, so I reckon that appointment looks unlikely.

"David Martindale would be an interesting one. He’s worked wonders with Livingston, so it would be interesting to see if he could cut it at a higher level.

"For me, John Kennedy would also be worth consideration. I know he’s maybe slightly left-field and lacks the managerial experience Aberdeen might feel they need right now.

"But I know from my own experience of working with him that he’s an excellent coach.

"He’s held in the highest regard by pretty much everyone he’s worked with.

"He’s been heavily linked with vacancies at Hibs and Motherwell in the past. Could this be the time where he finally branches out from Celtic and becomes the main man as a head coach?

"I reckon Aberdeen could do a lot worse than at least lift the phone and ask the question.

"Kennedy brings a wealth of experience working under the likes of Lennon, Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou.

"But one thing’s for sure. Aberdeen and Cormack must get this next appointment right. Dons fans deserve better than to see their club become the laughing stock of Scottish football."
