Stiliyan Petrov has admitted he is “surprised” Celtic have kept Martin O’Neill in the dugout, but insists the veteran boss was always the standout choice.
The former midfielder, who played under O’Neill at both Celtic and Aston Villa, questioned the length of the deal but backed the 74-year-old’s credentials to deliver again.

Petrov told Sky Sports: “I’m actually surprised that they only offered him a one-year deal. It should’ve been a two-year deal. With the job he’s done there last season, with the management skills…”
Despite his admiration, Petrov expected Celtic to move O’Neill into a less demanding role. He added: “I’m actually surprised. I thought that Celtic would offer Martin a new, different role, more relaxed, but it seems like they love this way.
“His skills and his ability to win major honours… he has obviously justified his appointment, and I hope and wish him all the best for next season.
“But I’m surprised, actually, that they haven’t offered him a different role, more relaxed — but Martin O’Neill is Martin O’Neill.”
Petrov also joked about O’Neill’s longevity, quipping: “He’ll be about 102 by the time that deal flies! No, listen, one-year deal, they just want to stabilise the club.

Legendary duo react to Martin O'Neill's permanent stay as Celtic manager
“They know that he’s done remarkably well, winning the championship being behind all season. The last couple of months, he has shown that he’s been such a great character.
“But there is a question: can he win again next year? What’s going to happen?”
Robbie Keane had been in contention for the role, but Petrov made it clear there was no real debate. He said: “Listen, I’ve followed Robbie’s managerial career, and he’s done really well.
“But when you compare Robbie Keane and Martin O’Neill, and you have the opportunity, and Martin O’Neill agreed to continue with his team, with his knowledge, to be the Celtic manager…
“There’s no question about it. He was always gonna be the first choice. As long as he agrees to it, and as long as he shows the same energy and determination to work for this great club.”
