Celtic hero Scott Brown's Fleetwood handed 'physical' tag as Everton boss hails 'test of character'

Frank Lampard has praised Scott Brown's Fleetwood Town side following Everton's second round Carabao Cup success over the English League outfit.

The Toffees went into the clash as favourites to progress and they narrowly defeated the Celtic hero and his troops with Demarai Gray the matchwinner in the 28th minute. Lampard has described the victory over The Cod Army as a 'test of character' as he hailed Fleetwood as a 'physical' team and a good challenge for his men.

Speaking about the match, he told Everton's official website: “There are parts of the performance I liked. We can improve. I wanted a bit more intensity off the ball at times. And the quality of our play, moments when we can make a killer pass and take control of the game, I thought we were a little bit loose at times. It was a test of character and a test of quality.

“I think we succeeded on the test of character, for sure, but we could have been better at times on the test of quality.

“Fleetwood gave us a good match. They’re a physical team. In that sense it was a good challenge for us.

"In terms of our performance, it wasn’t amazing, but I’ve played in many nights like these – and been beaten on nights like this as well – so I understand they’re not easy.”

Celtic legend Brown and his troops now turn attentions to domestic matters this weekend against Lincoln City.

For Everton, it's an away clash at Brentford.
