Celtic hero Frank McAvennie in Rangers 'might have kept it down to five' Connor Goldson remark

Frank McAvennie had a cheeky swipe at Rangers by insisting they 'might have kept it down to five' had Connor Goldson not got injured at the end of the first half against Liverpool.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst suffered the major injury blow just before the interval with the ever-present defender pictured on crutches after the Champions League mauling. Report suggest he could face MONTHS on the sidelines with a suspected severe thigh muscle tear. The score was level at 1-1 when the stopper went off but the EPL outfit upped the ante in the second period to leave Ibrox with a 7-1 win.

Super sub Mo Salah scored a hat-trick inside six minutes while Roberto Firmino netted a double with Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott also on target in the Battle of Britain clash. Scott Arfield had given the hosts the lead before the huge comeback win by the Reds.

Celtic hero McAvennie admits Goldson has been one of Rangers' heroes and a real stalwart since his arrival at the club. Youngster Leon King replaced the injured stopper as he came up against Liverpool for the second time in a week. Macca didn't hold back in his assessment of the 18-year-old as he made a cheeky jibe over the scoreline.

He told Football Insider: “I felt sorry for Goldson.

“He has not missed a game in such a long time. He is one of the heroes that came in because he came for nothing. He has been a stalwart.

“When you come up against quality in the Champions League they are leaking goals, they can’t do much about it.

“King when he came on looked like rabbits in headlights, he must have been terrified when he saw Salah coming on.

“I am not saying Goldson would have been any better but he might have kept it down to five.“
