Celtic handed tricky Champions League play-off tie

  • Celtic have been drawn against Austrian champions LASK in the Champions League play-offs, with Martin O'Neill's side being the first team drawn.
  • The Hoops successfully avoided a potential rematch with Kairat Almaty, the team that eliminated them on penalties at the same stage last season.
  • The first leg of the play-off tie is scheduled to take place on either 18 or 19 August, with the decisive second leg following in the subsequent week.
  • LASK, based in Linz, secured their second Austrian Bundesliga title last season, finishing two points clear of defending champions Sturm Graz, and also clinched the Austrian Cup.
  • Despite their recent domestic triumphs, LASK's European record is mixed, having reached the last 16 of the Europa League in 2020 and the Conference League in 2022, but winning only one of their last 14 European fixtures.
