Celtic goalkeeper makes boxing debut as Cambusnethan stars claim Novice Championship medals

Cambusnethan Miners’ Welfare ABC took three medals from the Scottish Novice Championships in Motherwell last month.

Ross Dobbin and Jack Dunbar won gold and Mia Pearson took silver from the tournament, which was held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility over the weekends of February 5 and 6 and 11 and 12.

Dobbin won the 2011 29.5kg gold medal, while Dunbar took top prize in the 2009 34kg category.

Young Celtic pro-youth goalkeeper Marcus Gill also took part in the event, in what was his first ever competitive outing, but lost out.

Gill joined the club for extra fitness, but quickly progressed to the point that coach Gerry Taggart felt he was ready.

Gerry said: “Marcus has only really been training for a few months and he is from a footballing background, where he plays pro-youth in goals for Celtic.

“The big man never really found his rhythm, but showed great composure for his first bout at such a big event.

"Ross won his two bouts clearly, showing some slick boxing skills, outboxing and out-working his opponents for two clear wins.

“This was Ross’ first competitive year boxing, and he is showing a great deal of promise.

“Jack boxed lovely over his semi-final and final, won both bouts, working on the back foot and using accurately placed counter-punches.

“Jack has been making fantastic progress since he joined the club, and we are sure it will be the first title of many.

“Mia took a silver in her final, against a good boxer from Hawick.

“It was a tough battle across the three rounds, with her opponent just edging the decision.”

Gerry was proud of how all his boxers prepared for the fights and their displays on the day, although some were unable to get the full experience.

He added: “Kendra Felvus and Emma McCafferty did not have opponents in their categories so didn’t box.

“Both girls had worked extremely hard in preparation, so it was a big let-down when they were unable to compete.

"But all of our entries gave a good account of themselves, and win or lose, it will be a great experience in their development.

“The event is the biggest amateur boxing event in the UK, and attracted over 700 entries from across Scotland, so the club are extremely proud of the boxers’ achievements.”
