Antonio Colak didn’t get a goal against Kilmarnock but he’s netted the praise of Rangers boss Michael Beale.
The Ibrox gaffer was delighted with the way his striker responded after being given a rare chance to fill in for Alfred Morelos. But while Beale was purring over the former PAOK ace’s performance in Saturday’s 3-1, there were fan frustrations over the opportunities the Light Blues coughed up for Killie in a sub-standard second-half showing. Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “It was nice to see Colak on from the kick-off, he played a good all-round game and it was a great first half to watch.
“Beale has finally woken up by keeping Colak on almost the full 90. Alfredo Morelos days are surely numbered as this side looked better with Colak leading the line. Cantwell looks very good too with his ball control and his passing when running with the ball at his feet. He’s a class player who look similar in style to Jim Baxter.”
But Steven Munro called in to say: “That was a the very definition of a game of two halves. Rangers were excellent in the first 45 and everything they weren’t at Hampden. Energetic, quick, slick and clinical. But the second half was like watching a repeat of the Viaplay Cup final with far too many sloppy mistakes. There’s still too many players who don’t have the right mentality at Ibrox.”
Celtic fan Henry Moffat, Stirling, was an interested observer of events at Ibrox, saying: “After hearing all week how Rangers would have beaten us 5-0 if Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell had played at Hampden I thought I would watch 30 minutes of Saturday’s match to assess these two Galacticos - and what a laugh! Both players regularly passed straight to opposition players and Raskin looked slower than a VAR decision!”
The news that Tom Lawrence is out for the rest of the season, with Kemar Roofe also back on Gers casualty list drew fresh groans from the Ibrox faithful. Kevin Kean emailed in: “Rangers need to look at their physio staff. They have fitness analysts, a head of strength, conditioning and preparation yet we’ve seen two minutes of John Souttar since the opening game, Filip Helander’s been out even longer and now Roofe can't play two games in a row. What does this backroom lot actually do?”
Robert Pender added: “Whoever sanctioned the signing of so many injury-prone players should be held to question. Who does the medicals, the scouting, the history background and who backs with money? Something is not right. Rangers remind me of worn out injury riddled greyhounds - look good on paper but wrapped up in blankets.”
Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, called to say: “What is going on at Rangers and them buying players that have injuries or just come with a reputation for skills talent that seems to disappear the moment they walk through Ibrox’s front door. Beale and Ross Wilson have to get their act together. Success over the past 11 years has been unacceptable.”
The suggestion from last week’s caller Neil Renton that Rangers go for Kieran Tierney sparked a predictable reaction. Tom Paterson, Falkirk, was first to bite, saying: “What has Neil Renton been drinking?
“Rangers should sign Tierney? He's on £110,000 per week at Arsenal - I don't need to say any more do I? But if you offered him DOUBLE that I don't think he'd sign for Gers!"
Dundee United's troubles continued as new boss Jim Goodwin was unable to spare them a 3-1 defeat to his old side Aberdeen. Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: "Dundee United need a few ‘Goodwins’ to avoid relegation but they won’t find it with Jim in charge. The Terrors should have gone for Ian McCall." Alfie Mullin, London, added: “It's so funny, the Tannadice team are getting relegated. I think we should rename them Downdee United.”
