Celtic fan declares Rangers one night only allegiance as brave caller puts his money where his mouth is - Hotline

A date with destiny has arrived for Rangers and the Hotline united to wish Rangers warm wishes ahead of their Europa League Final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Even Celtic fans offered good luck messages and there were also a few calls which weren't so generous of heart.

Brian Kelly, Peterhead, said: "I'm a Celtic fan and it's time to put rivalry aside and hope Rangers win the Europa League for Scotland. I'm confident they'll win and got a bet on at the bookies."

Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: "Rangers the underdogs are one step from immortality if they can beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League Cup Final in Seville on Wednesday and write another chapter in our history books on this incredible fairytale journey that nobody thought was possible."

John Scott, Grassmoor, said: "Rangers came back from League Two but their supporters poured millions into the club and continued to back them in huge numbers. It's hardly a rise to the top from obscurity is it. Most of us will be wishing Rangers to victory in Seville but to quote Michael Gove, 'calm down, calm down'."

Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: "So if Frankfurt win the Europa League, it's better than Bayern Munich winning the European Cup in the 1970s?

"Rangers fans and ex-players need to get a grip, it's embarrassing."

Charles Buchanan, emailed: "So now we have Kevin Thomson saying Rangers winning the Europa League would eclipse the Lisbon Lions. What nonsense. Tell him to get 11 players from a thirty mile radius of Ibrox, all home grown players to win the league, never mind the European Cup."

Bud Hay, Dumfries, said: "I was in Seville when Celtic lost against Porto in a European final and my two sons are Rangers supporters so we will see if they can win the second best trophy in Europe. I bet Rangers to lift the trophy at 9/1 earlier in the competition and I will win a monkey if they win. I hope they do and that the thousands of fans out in Spain enjoy themselves as it might not happen again and they all get home safe and sound."

Kenneth Houston, emailed: "Yet again we have former Rangers players claiming that winning the Europa League will be a better achievement, than Celtic winning the European Cup. Utter garbage, how many of the teams that Rangers have faced through the tournament won their league last year? As for being the best Scottish team with European trophies, Aberdeen already have two, the Cup Winners Cup in 1982/83 and Super Cup in 1983/1984."

Robert Frew, Glasgow, said: "First ex-Hibee Kenny Miller and now Thomson claims that Rangers winning the Europa League would outdo the Lisbon Lions achievement. I can now see where Hibs fan Irving Welsh got his inspiration for writing ‘Trainspotting’."

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: "Thomson is talking absolute mince . Unless any Scottish team wins the Champions League, there is nothing that can compare to the Lisbon Lions."

Willie Mercer, Dumfries, said: "It's amusing to see how desperate some Celtic fans are in undermining what Rangers have achieved in reaching the Europa Cup Final by trying to belittle the quality of opposition beaten on the way to the final.

"One Hotline caller said Celtic beat Barcelona and Manchester United in the Champions League. I think he forgets that this was 12 and 16 years ago respectively. You'd think he would remember Bodo Glimt this season."

Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: "Rangers fans can’t just enjoy the moment and revel in their achievement, they have to constantly talk about Celtic.

"Their fans are calling us obsessed but I believe it’s clearly the other way around. I know when I was in Seville, Rangers were the last thing on my mind."

Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: "I hope that the clubs who voted to demote Rangers are choking when they watch Rangers in this final. They set Scottish Football back 10 years.

"The coefficient points gained which have prompted Dundee United and Motherwell supporters to attend matches with inflatables and Hawaiian Shirts. I bet they regret the day that they cast their vote.

"They tried to put us out of business, and now we are the only show in town."
