Celtic deserved Real Madrid 'standing ovation' as Michael Stewart makes 'no shame' statement

Celtic were deserving of a standing ovation from the pitch after their defeat to Champions League holders Real Madrid, according to former goalkeeper Packie Bonner.

Callum McGregor hit the post while Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda also missed big chances to put the Hoops into a shock lead. But soon they were outdone by Los Blancos and goals from Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard confirmed three Group F points for Real in a three-nil win. Speaking on BBC Sportsound, their goalkeeping hero believes Celtic fans opting to stay after the full-time whistle and vocally cheer Ange Postecoglou's men and their opposition off the park was just.

Bonner said: "I don't see anything wrong with it at all. There's no shame in Celtic getting beat 3-0. If they'd scored in the first half there might have been a slightly different outcome to the game. It is a great lesson for them. I think fans were right to give Celtic a standing ovation even though it was 3-0.

Fellow pundit Michael Stewart doesn't think the scoreline reflects badly on the Hoops. He added: "Celtic, if they take their opportunities, you never know.

"Everything needs to go their way and it didn't. There is no shame in Celtic. There is a way to a game of football and they can hold their heads high.

"They have come up against the champions of Europe and did themselves very well. They will be buoyed and confident heading into the other games."
