Celtic defender Welsh emerges as transfer target for two Serie A clubs

Stephen Welsh is reportedly a transfer target for Serie A side Hellas Verona.

It's claimed the Italian club are monitoring Welsh's situation at Celtic.

The Daily Mail report Welsh could be the first player to leave the club this summer after Brendan Rodgers' arrival.

The outlet reports Hella Verona are interested in landing Welsh - with Josh Doig also at the Serie A club.

And the report goes on to state Doig - who has impressed in Italy since his move from Hibs - is himself being targeted by Bologna in a player-plus-cash.

In another twist, Bologna are also thought to be watching Welsh with the defender expected to want first-team future next season.

It comes after Rodgers issued a "don't worry" transfer call to Celtic fans amid rumours of an Ange Postecoglou raid at Parkhead.

The returning manager has been promised a bumper transfer budget to help his team compete in Europe - but he's also confident outgoings won't be on the cheap.

He said: “Over the course of our discussions I’ve seen the market we’re in and how well the recruitment has gone.

“Mark Lawwell has this pipeline of players that are available and I think it’s really impressive what he’s done since coming in and the markets he’s been able to tap into.

“That will continue. That’s where the club is at. Listen, when you’ve got top players at the club they are always going to attract attention elsewhere.

“Those boys have come in and done exceptionally well. Good players will always attract attention. But I don’t worry about that.”
