Celtic Champions League squad confirmed with James McCarthy call made and senior star left out

Celtic's squad for the upcoming UEFA Champions League matches has been confirmed ahead of their return to the competition.

The Hoops' involvement in recent years has been limited to qualification round cameos but they are back in the big time this season under Ange Postecoglou after last season's Premiership title success. They face Real Madrid on Tuesday night as they kick off a group where they will also play German side RB Leipzig and Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk. Ahead of it, their official squad list has been revealed and there are no glaring shocks involved for Celtic.

Yosuke Ideguchi is the only notable senior player excluded amid his battle with injury, with the most surprising inclusion perhaps being James McCarthy. The experienced midfielder was reportedly allowed to seek a loan deal on transfer deadline day but nothing came to fruition. He is now in contention to take on some of Europe's best.
