Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou admits 'I probably didn’t handle it too well' after VAR penalty drama

Ange Postecoglou has blasted VAR for ending the flow of the game after watching his side endure long delays on decisions in Celtic’s win over Dundee United.

The Hoops boss was left frustrated over a lengthy pause as officials poured over whether or not Alexandro Bernabei handled the ball. A penalty was eventually awarded against Celtic but their manager was left seething on the sidelines over the time it took as he claimed the decision “didn’t even need VAR.”

Celtic went on to win the game 4-2 after producing a late Celtic Park show of character after a Tony Watt equaliser stunned the home fans on 88 minutes. Postecoglou referred to his ‘we never stop’ mantra once again after watching his side blow United away with two quick-fire goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada as they fought back. Speaking to Celtic TV, the Parkhead manager said said: “I think people realise by now, it’s not by chance. It’s something we have drilled into the guys since day one. They’ve embraced it, they refuse to yield, they refuse to give up. There is no lost cause.”

When asked if VAR was interrupting the flow of the game, Postecoglou said: “Absolutely. I was probably more frustrated than anyone. I probably didn’t handle it too well. I’ve got no issue with VAR, but they don’t have to use it.

“The decisions they made today could have been done very quickly but you know, I don’t think we come to the football to sit and wait for somebody a long way away from here to make a decision. I just don’t think that is what football is about.

“If they say it’s a hand ball say it’s hand ball and it’s a penalty, let’s just get on with it. We don’t have to sit there for so long just to come to a decision.”
