Celtic and Rangers punters embroiled in calculator wars as Chris Sutton met with Hotline blowback

Chris Sutton reckons Josip Juranovic is now worth 10 times the £2.5million Celtic paid Legia Warsaw for his services 16 months ago.

The Croatia full-back could move next month after starring in Qatar for the Chequered Ones but one caller reckons Sutton needs to keep his valuation in check.

Billy McCallum emailed: “Just wondering if you could get Chris Sutton to value Borna Barisic as he values Josip Juranovic at £25m. Barisic has played in a European final last season and is in same team as Juranovic in the semi final of World Cup and plays regularly for Rangers. So he must be worth at least £15m if Rangers choose to sell him.” However, Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “Why wouldn't Celtic get the money they deserve for Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis? One is a proven goalscorer and the other a World Cup semi finalist. Rangers got big money for unproven and uncapped players. Now they have an unproven manager at the helm trying to beg players to stay who are well past their sell by date.”

After a five-week break the Premiership title scrap finally resumes tomorrow night. Not that the war of words on the Hotline ever stopped. Rangers warmed up for the visit of Hibs with a 3-0 friendly win over Bayer Leverkusen.

But Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “You have to laugh at all the excitement at Rangers because they won a friendly. How many times have we heard their optimism and then going on to win nothing? A new manager always lifts a team but you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.”

Bill Lockerbie, Northampton, said: “I see Nacho Novo has backed his old team to steal the Premiership crown from Celtic. He's right, given that they've no chancing of winning it, that's probably the best option.”

Henry Wallace emailed: “Why are Celtic and their board, management and fans going OTT regarding their amazing manager In a lacklustre league? Let's analyse his disastrous European record including three knock outs in the one season. You all have your blinkers on and let's expose this nonsense.”

On a different tack Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “With Celtic players raising the profile of Scottish football with their performances in the World Cup, I firmly believe that Tom Rogic would have done the same if he had remained at Celtic. However I was delighted to see him coming off the bench for West Brom and score against Sunderland. The deciding factor in his leaving was Postecoqlou’s ‘we never stop’ mantra which obviously never suited his style of play.”

Aberdeen were the latest top flight side to hold their AGM with Jim Goodwin admitting his side “can do better”. Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: “Well done to Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin for being honest in his appraisal of his teams performance since he took over. More managers should take a page out of his book and admit the truth.”

Back to the fall out from England’s drop out at the World Cup. There were mixed views with our own David McCarthy coming in for praise for his appraisal of the Three Lions.

Jim McIntosh, Uddingston, said: “David McCarthy’s excellent article in Monday’s Record was a refreshing change from the anti England rhetoric currently being written. Honest, unbiased journalism.”

But Scott Kerr, Knightswood, said: “Gary Neville says the ref was shocking. They got two penalties, a free kick at the end of 10 minutes’ injury time even though only eight minutes were added and when Harry Kane fell in the box in the first half the contact was outside the box - a free kick it was so not a penalty. Bukayo Saka is the new Raheem Sterling when a player goes near him he dives. France were the superior team.”

And John Smith was feline humorous as he took a pop at Gareth Southgate’s squad adopting Dave the cat in Qatar. John emailed: “I had to laugh at the England team - they couldn’t come back with the World Cup so come back with a stray cat instead.”
