Celtic and Rangers hit with UEFA fines after Champions League fan incidents

Celtic and Rangers have both been fined by UEFA for their respective fans conduct during recent European matches.

The pair are currently in the Champions League but not for much longer, as both Glasgow giants have had their chances of reaching the last 16 ended after four matchdays. Each of them have now felt the wrath of the football hierarchy for breaches. Rangers ' come from their 2-0 Group A defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, which was followed up by losing 7-1 at home on a sobering night at Ibrox.

The charges from UEFA are for throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, provocative message of an offensive nature, and violation of the UEFA Return to Play Protocol. The fireworks earn them a €16.5k fine, while the offensive message and return to play violation gain €10k penalties each. €3.75k was added for the fireworks. That adds up to around £35k in total.

For Celtic, their charges stem from an away trip to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, a match which they eventually lost 3-1.

They've been handed a fine of €19,500 (£17k approx) for the lighting of fireworks in the away end at Red Bull Arena and €12,750 (£11.1k) for the throwing of objects is what Leipzig have got.

The Hoops have already been hit for an anti-monarchy banner in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II's passing last month.
