Rangers and Celtic fans have urged St Johnstone boycotters to direct their fury at their own club as Perth ultras group Fair City Unity organise a protest against ticket pricing at Ibrox.
The Saints supporters have thrown their support behind the Twenty's Plenty campaign which aims to cap all ticket prices across Scottish football at £20 per match. It comes after St Johnstone fans travelling to Ibrox for their clash with Rangers this weekend learned adult tickets would set them back £31 each.
The fan group put out a lengthy statement slamming "unwarranted and extortionate" pricing during the cost of living crisis, and urged fellow supporters to boycott the 1,000 allocation they have been given. Fans of the Glasgow giants, though, have jumped to their clubs’ defence, pointing out St Johnstone themselves charge similar when Rangers and Celtic come to town - with some away fans paying £30 to get into McDiarmid Park last season.
Contextualising it as an issue across the whole of Scottish football, one Rangers fan wrote: "The cost of away tickets are ridiculous in Scottish football and I don’t blame St Johnstone for taking a stand. Off the top of my head only Livi and Ross County were less than £30 for Rangers away allocations last season."
Another said: "This is a laugh. Last time I was at McDiarmid Park following Rangers it cost me and the boy the best part of £70 for our two tickets." One fan urged the Saints fans to turn up the heat on their own board, saying: "Boycott all they want. They charge us £30 an adult ticket when we go and fill their stands. Hibs charging £33, Aberdeen £33+, Celtic £49+. Maybe ask their own board to cut away ticket prices themselves." And another added: "Agree with this but be a bit hypocritical if they’re still cashing in on the two and a half stands they give the Old Firm when at home and charge £30."
