Celtic and Rangers braced for Super League 2.0 as more than 50 invitations sent for seismic European football revamp

The European Super League have confirmed they want to reboot the project that went up in flames two years ago, it's been claimed.

Scottish Premiership giants Celtic and Rangers have been on red alert for some time over the possible game-changing alteration of football in Europe, with contact made with 'more than 50 clubs in the hope of creating a new European tournament' according to The Telegraph. It was reported last year that the Glasgow pair were to be targeted as part of fresh plans, with this version being multi-division competition of 60 to 80 teams that has no permanent members, and a minimum of 14 games each season for every competitor.

Three rebels remain – Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid – after English Premier League clubs stepped away from the movement following a fiery fan response in 2021. A22, the sister company of the ESL, 'claim that the new project is a result of detailed conversations with clubs around Europe on the financial problems facing them’.

Their attacks are focused on England's top flight riches and how that impacts on other European leagues with lesser TV deals, such as Scotland. The format of the proposed new Super League has been kept a secret but question remains on how it will work.

However, chief executive of A22, Bernd Reichart, is hell-bent on ripping up the status quo. Reichart said: “It is the clubs that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football.

"But when it comes to important decisions, they are too often forced to stand idly by from the sidelines as the sporting and financial foundations run under their hands. Our talks have also made it clear that it is often impossible for clubs to raise their voices publicly against a system that uses the threat of sanctions to prevent opposition.”
