Celine x Reebok Turns a 1980s Athletic Sneaker Into a Fashion Statement

Celine and Reebok are putting a Parisian fashion perspective on one of Reebok's most recognizable designs with a new interpretation of the Freestyle Lo, the low-cut sneaker originally introduced in 1982. The collaboration has now been revealed in full following its appearance at Celine's Spring/Summer 2027 menswear show in Paris, with the collection presented through a new campaign and a lineup of eight colors.

The project brings together Celine creative director Michael Rider and Reebok's longstanding sportswear heritage. Wallpaper* describes the collaboration as a colorful take on the 1982 Freestyle Lo, while Celine's own website calls it simply "The 1982 Reebok Freestyle Lo, revisited."

The Freestyle Lo Gets a New Fashion Context

The sneaker made its first appearance during Rider's June menswear show at the Tennis Club de Paris. The presentation marked Rider's first standalone menswear collection for Celine, a milestone also documented by Vogue, which described the collection as a mix of tailored clothing, athletic references, expressive accessories and vivid color.

The Reebok collaboration fits naturally into that setting. Wallpaper* reported that Rider's approach to Celine combines American preppy references with Parisian flair, while the designer characterized the sneaker partnership as "heritage two ways" and described its meeting of influences as "Paris street, American movement."

The shoe itself retains the identity of the Freestyle Lo while receiving a more fashion-focused treatment. Wallpaper* describes the updated version as being constructed in soft leather and notes that it has a gently worn-in feel, while the collaboration comes in eight different colorways.

Those colors range from familiar neutrals to more distinctive shades. Celine officially lists Optic White, Black, Butter, Beige, Peanut, Dark Brown, Oxblood and Fluo Red, giving the collaboration a palette that moves between understated and more expressive options.

From 1982 to Celine's Spring 2027 Collection

The collaboration draws on a sneaker with a specific place in Reebok's history. According to Reebok, the Freestyle was introduced in 1982 as the brand's first athletic shoe designed specifically for women's fitness, arriving during the aerobics boom and subsequently becoming one of its best-known silhouettes.

Wallpaper* similarly traces the Freestyle Lo to 1982 and identifies designer Angel Martinez as responsible for the original design. The publication notes that the model later evolved into the Freestyle Hi, distinguished by its two Velcro straps.

More than four decades after its introduction, the Freestyle Lo is therefore being placed within a very different fashion environment. Rather than abandoning its athletic origins, the Celine collaboration uses the existing silhouette as a bridge between Reebok's sportswear history and Rider's current vision for the French house.

That vision was particularly visible throughout Celine's Spring/Summer 2027 collection. Vogue noted the combination of classic tailoring, athletic elements, vivid green, sky blue and red, as well as more neutral shades, describing Rider's debut as a deliberately eclectic new chapter for the house.

The Reebok sneaker extends that approach beyond the runway. Wallpaper* reports that the collaboration will be available at selected Celine stores worldwide following a launch event during New York Fashion Week, with locations including New York, Tokyo, Beverly Hills, Miami, Paris, Milan, Dubai, London, Shanghai, Seoul, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The release gives a familiar 1980s sportswear silhouette a new setting without obscuring where it came from. For Celine and Reebok, the Freestyle Lo becomes a meeting point between an established athletic design and the contemporary Parisian fashion language introduced under Rider.
