Celebrity Gogglebox fans confused as Denise Van Outen stays silent on her starring role

Celebrity Gogglebox viewers were left confused as actress Denise Van Outen failed to mention her own starring role in a TC show featured on the programme.

Celebrity Gogglebox stars shared their memories of Neighbours as the Australian TV soap comes to an end. Dame Joanna Lumley and Denise van Outen were among the famous faces to comment on the demise of the show on Friday.

The cast of Channel 4's TV review show were shown highlights from the long history of Neighbours, including the marriage of Scott Mitchell and Charlene Robinson (played by Donovan and Minogue). The famous scene was watched by more than 20 million UK viewers at the time.

Denise van Outen said: "They were actually together dating, which is why it was so sweet".

But fans at home were left perplexed as to why Denise didn't bring up her own stint on the Aussie soap. The actress, 47, played Prue Wallace on the soap between 2019 and 2020 and was the on-screen mother to Harlow Robinson, played by Jason Donovan's daughter Jemma.

Sarah Evans @sazmi posted: "I’m sorry, is Denise not going to mention that she was in #Neighbours as Jason Donovan’s real life daughters soap mother."

Emma Buckland @buckland_emma added: "Don't think Denise Van Outen mentioned being in Neighbours either."

Neighbours aired for more than 9,000 episodes across its 37-year history. It helped kickstart the careers of stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth and Guy Pierce.

Commenting on a BBC News package reporting the end of the soap, Andi Oliver said: "It's really weird. I don't understand a world without Neighbours." Babatunde Aléshé quipped: "I didn't even know it was still going".

Lucy Richardson commented: "I remember crying at this bit. I was really upset he was getting married – I wanted to marry him".

Dame Joanna Lumley joked that she would now watch the show. She said: "Now we can watch 9,000 episodes on playback [...] I'm going to binge-watch it."

The Ramsay Street cast filmed the show's final scene last week. It is due to be broadcast on August 1.

For many years the soap drew in bigger audiences in the UK than in Australia, with a funding deal between Channel 5 and home broadcaster Network 10 keeping the programme on air. Channel 5 said dropping the soap meant more investment could be made in its original UK dramas.

Commenting on the Celebrity Gogglebox segment on Twitter, @David_Irons65 said:"I just love the so called naivety of these celebrities who have clearly lived in a cave for the last 20 years whilst discussing Neighbours #gogglebox"

@JuneGloom20 added: "Love the idea of [Brandreth] and Joanna watching all 8000+ episodes of #Neighbours!"

Other celebrities to feature on Gogglebox included Nick and Liv Grimshaw, Zoe Ball and Woody Cook, Rylan and his mum Linda, Clare Balding and Alice Arnold, Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher, the Kemp family, and Tom Allen and Rob Beckett. They reviewed programmes including This Is MY House, Romeo and Duet and the latest series of Stranger Things.

Celebrity Gogglebox continues next Friday at 9pm on Channel 4 and All4.
