TV chef James Martin has shared the surprising reason why people should avoid refrigerating their eggs.
According to the former Saturday Kitchen presenter, eggs "absorb all the flavours from the fridge" which can impact the taste of the eggs themselves as well as other foods.
He spoke about why you shouldn't leave your eggs in the fridge and where you should store them instead in a previous episode of ITV's This Morning.
As reported by the Express, James explained: "All eggs are porous - that’s why you don’t put them in the fridge by the way [because] they absorb all the flavours from the fridge.
"If you have truffle for instance, in the restaurant we put that in a bowl with rice and put the eggs on the top and cling film it and leave it overnight.
"When you break the eggs in the morning for breakfast for customers, [you get] truffle scrambled eggs but there’s no truffle in it."
According to the Food Standards Agency, you should "store whole eggs in a cool dry place, ideally in the fridge, until you use them".
However, the food regulator's reasoning is slightly different as their website states: “Storing eggs at a constant cool temperature will help to keep them safe."
Recently, egg suppliers and producers have been struggling due to shortages caused by rising costs and avian influenza outbreaks.
Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Marks & Spencer and Morrisons have all begun rationing the sale of boxes of eggs to stop the shelves from going empty.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has called for an “urgent investigation” from the UK government into the disruption of egg supplies.
The NFU said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs should look into whether a declaration should be made under the Agriculture Act 2020 to ensure “much-needed support” for egg producers.
