Celebrations planned as Kirkcudbright says goodbye to Galloway Viking Hoard

Kirkcudbright will say goodbye to the Galloway Viking Hoard this weekend.

More than 30,000 people have seen items from the £2 million find since it went on display at Kirkcudbright Galleries in October.

But time is running out to see the incredible artefacts with the exhibition set to close on Sunday.

Anyone heading to the gallery today will be able to make their own Viking costumes ahead of the super celebrations at the weekend.

From 10am until 4pm on Saturday there will be a Viking encampment in Soaperie Gardens across the road from the galleries. People will be able to take part in warrior training, shield wall training and storytelling as well as costume making.

And at 7pm everyone is encouraged to dress in their finest Viking gear and join the Galloway Honour Guard as it parades through the town. Once it reaches the stage in Harbour Square, people will be able to watch a special Viking boat burning from Moat Brae.

The Viking Village will still be in Soaperie Gardens on Sunday and the gallery will be open between 10am and 4pm to give people a last chance to see the hoard before it heads to a new exhibition in Aberdeen.
