A stream of purple and a procession of motorbikes and cars through a Bristol village this weekend will mark the 17th birthday of a local teenager who tragically lost his life in a crash last year. Daniel Davies died while riding his moped, in a collision with a car on the A4174 through-about near Warmley on the evening of April 17.
To mark Daniel's 17th birthday, which was on March 1, his mum Samantha planned a celebration ride-out through Warmley this Saturday (March 4). It comes after more than 200 motorbikes followed his funeral procession last year and she hopes to recreate the moment to celebrate what would have been his birthday.
The event will raise money for the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) with a number of motorbike clubs and car enthusiasts expected to join the ride. Speaking to Bristol Live, Samantha said: “Daniel loved that bike and he was passionate about bikes. Because it was his 17th birthday this week on March 1, I wanted to do something with the bikers.
“I put it out on social media and I have also had car enthusiasts contacting me to join the ride, so we’re going to have cars and bikes." She said everyone should meet at the Co-Op Funeral Care in Warmley at 10.30am with the planned ride-out leaving at 11am.
Samantha said she had bought 150 purple balloons for the ride and was hoping to have a “stream of purple” to celebrate her son’s special day. The route will also pass through the roundabout where the collision took place.
Following Daniel's death his mum set up the Daniel Davies Sycamore Fund which raises money for GWAAC, which has so far received almost £2,000 in donations. Samantha said the charity does amazing work, adding: “We don’t know when we are going to need them.”
The ride-out will complete a circular route and will end back at Co-Op Funeral Care (BS30 8FR) where pizzas and drinks will be on sale.
A spokesperson for Great Western Air Ambulance Charity said : "Our crew gets called out to the worst cases, we are often people's last chance. It's not only about those who survive, but also those who don't survive, keeping the memories alive and helping families. It's brilliant that Sam Davies is doing this and we will be at the ride."
Police arrested a man following Daniel's death, who was later released under investigation. In February Avon and Somerset Police said the investigation is ongoing.
