Scores of colourful women donning tutus and leg warmers will gather in Exhibition Park to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. The annual event welcomes women of all shapes and sizes, of all levels of ability, to get active and take part in a run, jog, walk or skip.
The city’s event, part of the This Girl Can campaign, will take over Exhibition Park and see scores of women get active over the one-mile or five-kilometre course. For lots of women and girls, physical activity isn’t always fun or enjoyable, it’s known as ‘the enjoyment gap’, but This Girl Can Newcastle aims to tackle that.
Organisers say, “We seek to tell the real stories of women who get active or play sport in the way that’s right for them, using images that show what activity really looks like in all its sweaty, jiggly glory. We never judge and we don’t care what other people think.”

Cllr Lesley Storey, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for a Vibrant City, said: “This Girl Can Newcastle is always one of the highlights of the year and it’s a great event to be involved in. Seeing the thousands of people lined up – often in an array of bright fancy dress outfits – warming up in unison on the start line creates an incredible atmosphere.”
She added: “It’s a wonderfully inclusive event that is open to anyone, it’s suitable for novice and experienced runners, and it just brings people together to celebrate the role and achievements of women across the world while having fun in the process.”
