Celebrity crimper Nicky Clarke has been forced to close his flagship Mayfair salon after a cash crisis.
Tousle-haired Nicky – who charges up to £5,000 for a blow dry – says he has spent months trying to keep the business afloat, but says the branch, which has been in operation for three decades, was no longer viable.
The 63-year-old has tended to the tresses of celebrities including Liz Hurley, Gwyneth Paltrow and even Princess Diana.
But due to the pandemic and increased Central London rental rates, the salon has been shut for good.
“It is with great regret that we must announce the immediate closure of our flagship Nicky Clarke salon in Mayfair,” said Nicky and wife Lesley Clarke, who opened the salon in 1991.
“This prestigious salon has been in Mayfair for over 30 years and has been a huge part of our lives, both personally and professionally.
“However, the last two years have been the toughest we have experienced with Covid-enforced long-term closures, rising rates and overheads making the salon no longer economically sustainable.”
Speaking about the difficult decision, the couple said all staff would be “paid full” and “all our obligations to them fulfilled”.
“Hairdressing is more than just cutting hair,” they added.
The group will continue to operate a Nicky Clarke salon in Birmingham, as well as a manufacturing a range of electrical hair tools.

Caroline Flack’s celebrity friends are putting on a festival in her memory, headlined by Natalie Imbruglia and Louise Redknapp.
Flackstock will raise money for mental health charities, after the Love Island presenter took her own life in 2020.
Caroline’s mother Christine says: “My Caroline was never more herself or happier than at a music festival with her sister and her friends.
“Flackstock is the wonderful idea of those who knew her best and the perfect way to remember her singing, dancing and most of all laughing.”
There will be celebrity appearances from Dermot O’Leary, Kirsty Gallacher, Paddy McGuinness, Joel Dommett, Noel Fielding, June Sarpong and BBC Strictly Dancer’s Janette and Aljaz at the July 25 event, taking place at Englefield House in Berkshire.
Megan Fox and MGK's 'blood-drinking ceremonies'
Hollywood actress Megan Fox has been discussing the totally normal “blood-drinking ceremonies” she has with her fiance, musician Machine Gun Kelly.
“When I do it, it’s a passage or it is used for a reason,” she explains to Glamour magazine. “And it is controlled where it’s like, ‘Let’s shed a few drops of blood and each drink it’.
“He’s much more haphazard and hectic and chaotic, where he’s willing to just cut his chest open with broken glass and be like, ‘Take my soul’.”
Each vampire to their own.
