Federal investigators have named a source for a Salmonella outbreak that had been climbing for weeks without an identified food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 345 people in 27 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Javiana, with 36 hospitalizations and no deaths. The figures come from the joint CDC and FDA update published Aug. 5.
The food is fresh jalapeño peppers traced to a single grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, and imported into the United States by Coast Citrus Distributors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory says the company agreed to recall the remaining implicated product and is identifying and contacting affected customers.
