CCTV shows moment police officer knocked unconscious by headbutt

A man who knocked a police officer unconscious with a headbutt has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Liam Moriarty, 31, of no fixed address, was arrested on 6 September 2025 after he was involved in a car crash. Having sustained injuries in the collision, he was taken to Bedford Hospital for checks.

There he headbutted Special Constable Jack Capener with such force that both men were left unconscious, while SPC Capener's nose was also broken.

Bedfordshire Police say he continued his "violent outburst", resulting in more than £5,000-worth of damage to hospital equipment.

Moriarty admitted charges of inflicting GBH, assault on an emergency worker, and criminal damage on 27 February.
