CCTV reveals Scots tourist killed in scooter crash on Thai island was waiting at junction

Harrowing CCTV footage has revealed that a Scots man killed in Thailand was stationary at a junction, despite police initially claiming his motorbike smashed into the back of a garbage truck.

The new footage shows James Young, from Bonyrigg, and his pal on the white Honda scooter around 1am local time on Thursday, September 1.

The pair remain stationary at an intersection corner but the garbage truck appears to take the corner too tightly and slams into them.

James, 36, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services performed CPR for 10 minutes. He was found to have a broken neck and severe head wounds.

His friend and driver Pierre, 30, whose surname has not been released, was taken to the Koh Samui Hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

Police claimed last week that Pierre had tried to overtake the garbage truck but was unsuccessful, leading to the crash.

Officers also told the public that the pair had been drinking at a local bar before trying to ride back to their hotel on the dark and narrow road.

Lieutenant Colonel Chatchavil Nakmousik previously said: "From the initial investigation, we found that the two vehicles were travelling in the same direction. The garbage truck was in the front.

"James was the passenger. The rider tried to overtake the garbage truck but was not able to, leading to a collision. We will summon the truck driver and also the injured tourist for questioning. We will also be checking through the CCTV."

The shocking CCTV footage, posted by local outlet Fabulous Pattaya Media Group, has now confirmed that the pair were not at fault.

In the footage James and Pierre can be seen on the motorbike waiting at an intersectional corner. The garbage truck turns and knocks the pair off the bike, trapping and crushing them.

The truck can then be seen stopping down the road after crew realise there has been an accident.

The broadcaster on Fabulous Pattaya Media Group said: "CCTV clearly shows the two stopped at an intersection corner and the garbage truck, taking the corner too tightly, crushing them in the process.

"The truck driver told police he wasn't entirely sure how the accident occurred.

"But CCTV we're told was fully operational at the scene and having been checked makes it entirely clear how the accident occurred."
