New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has not exactly had an ideal start to his NFL career. Following a rookie season marred by turnovers, the Duke product was then thrust into the washing machine.
Jones has dealt with injury, a league-worst offensive line, underperforming receivers and a multitude of coaching changes. He’ll enter 2022 under his third different head coach, in his third different system and protected by an almost entirely new offensive line.
There are some out there who believe head coach Brian Daboll is exactly what the doctor ordered for Jones. He runs an offense that is more suited for DJ’s style of play, and his willingness to allow the 25-year-old to be aggressive is certainly a plus.
But for Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, he’s already seen all he needs to see from Jones. And while he does expected DJ to improve slightly under Daboll, Trapasso doesn’t believe it’ll be enough.
By now, I feel like I know what Jones will give the Giants and who he is as an NFL quarterback. He’s more competent than many naysayers — including myself — believed he’d be when he entered the league. And the environment around him is better. The coaching will be the best he’s had. He’s also in a contract year. Jones will be a touch better. But not enough for the Giants to consider extending him while simultaneously passing on a young, super-talented passer in next year’s draft.
Trapasso also states that Jones has no true strength to his game and that will likely haunt him — especially as the Giants look to curb his injuries while scrambling.
