CBP warns Memorial Day travelers against bringing banned items to US border crossings

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection is warning travelers of expected delays at the Detroit, Port Huron, and Sault Ste. Marie land border crossings during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.
  • To minimize processing times, the agency urges travelers to ensure they have all necessary documents, declare all goods including alcohol and agriculture items and report monetary instruments exceeding $10,000.
  • CBP also reminded the public that marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law regardless of its legal status in some local jurisdictions and advised drivers to check CBP.gov/travel for current advisories and border wait times.
  • Non-U.S. travelers are encouraged to apply for their I-94 online or through the CBP Link mobile app prior to arrival, which can significantly expedite their entry process at land border crossings.
  • Travelers under the Visa Waiver Program must obtain an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization before attempting to enter the U.S. by air or land, with more information available at esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
