Cavern Club waiter handed unexpected missing Adele item by stranger

A brick said to have been stolen from outside Liverpool's Cavern Club has been returned following an appeal.

Bill Heckle, who owns The Cavern nightclub, claimed a group of teenage girls stole a brick laid by Adele in 2011.

The incident happened at around 5pm on Monday, January 17 and Mr Heckle said he chose not to report it to police as he preferred to settle the matter "amicably".

Mr Heckle shared CCTV with the ECHO which appeared to show a group of young people taking a brick from the wall.

Yesterday the club boss told the ECHO that the brick had been handed into the club.

Mr Heckle said: "A lad came into the restaurant and left the brick with a waiter. He then left very quickly without saying very much."

Mr Heckle said he was happy with the outcome.

He said: "We had CCTV footage of the girls involved but I was reluctant to go to the police. I wanted to do it through the ECHO and that approach appears to have been successful.

"The girls have done the right thing by returning the brick.

"I want people to know that we have 24 hour CCTV footage in and outside our club. And we will use the footage when people break the law.

"Fortunately this matter now appears to be resolved. We will pay for the repairs and have the brick put back in the wall."

The wall of fame was unveiled in 1997 to celebrate the legends who played at the club in the past The club then began a new tradition, dedicating bricks to big name acts who played at the club such as Oasis , Jake Bugg and the Artic Monkeys.

Mr Heckle said the brick put in the wall by Adele has special significance.

He said: "Adele laid the brick after she sang in the club in 2011. I remember that day because she spent an hour at the bar talking to me about her beloved Spurs who were playing Everton at Goodison on the same day.

"She said that she planned on singing to the team later that night in their hotel. Unfortunately for her Everton got a later winner."

Mr Heckle said the wall of the Mathew Street club has a special history.

He said: "We unveiled the wall in 1997 during a special ceremony to celebrate all the legends who played at the club in the old days.

"And then we started a new tradition with stars who played at the club putting a brick in the wall with their name on it.

"Oasis , Jake Bugg and the Artic Monkeys are all on there so we are talking about the biggest names in the business.

"This wall is a major attraction and brings a lot of tourists to the city centre."
