In a week when the merits of pre-season competitions has again come under the spotlight, the Dr McKenna Cup continues to buck the trend in terms of popularity among the paying public.
Another big crowd is expected to attend this weekend’s semi-finals with Cavan hosting Tyrone on Saturday night.
The Red Hands are the most successful team in the competition’s history and last one the McKenna Cup in 2020.
However, they were beaten by Cavan and Armagh at the beginning of what turned out to be a turbulent 2022 season for the defending All-Ireland champions.
Tyrone finished top of Section B despite Derry’s last-gasp equaliser in Owenbeg on Wednesday night while Mickey Graham’s Breffnimen defeated Armagh by five points to top Section C.
