Catherine, Princess of Wales, is the picture of sophisticated mourning in Alexander McQueen

Catherine, Princess of Wales, joined the Royal Family in travelling to Westminster Abbey for the state funeral, on Monday 19 September.

The royal, who is known for her impeccable dress, was sombre but striking in her black, tailored dress coat. The impressively constructed garment featured a tuxedo style jacket front with peaked lapels, and a box pleated folds on the reverse.

The design is by Alexander McQueen, the British brand who dressed the Duchess on her wedding day and also for her 40th birthday portraits. Alexander McQueen is a brand famous for its intricate garment construction and Sarah Burton, who took over the house as creative director following the death of its founder in 2010, has continued it’s legacy as a go-to for skillful tailoring.

Catherine travelled by car to the service with Camilla, the Queen Consort, and her two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and was the picture of mourning in a wide brimmed black hat, and full netted veil.

The Princess wore the same four string pearl necklace with a diamond clasp that she opted to wear at the funeral of Prince Philip last April, which was a touching nod to Her Majesty.

The lavish necklace was made by the 173-founded jeweller Garrard & Co, and was reportedly a gift to the Queen from the Japanese government. It is a style The Queen wore in the 1980s and 90s, and one that was also loaned to Princess Diana.

The Princess of Wales matched the historical necklace with the pearl drop earrings gifted to Princess Elizabeth by the Sheikh of Bahrain on her wedding day in 1947, as well as a four strand pearl bracelet also formally owned by her majesty.
