Cat charity's new campaign praised by Lanarkshire MSP

A Lanarkshire MSP has met with representatives from a cat charity at parliament.

Rutherglen politician Clare Haughey caught up with the UK’s leading feline welfare charity at a reception in Holyrood.

Cats Protection’s mission is to support Scotland’s 685,000 pet cats and their owners.

As part of this, they have a Scottish network of 24 volunteer-run branches, four adoption centres, and nine charity shops– including one on Rutherglen Main Street – which also offer advice on cat care.

In 2021, the charity rehomed 2500 cats in Scotland and helped neuter 10,500 cats and microchip 1600 cats.

The charity has recently launched a new campaign, ‘The Time is Meow’, which calls on Scottish lawmakers to take steps to improve the welfare of cats.

Cats Protection’s Advocacy and Government Relations Officer for Scotland Alice Palombo told Lanarkshire Live: “It was wonderful to welcome so many MSPs who were keen to find out how they can support cats and the people who care about them.

“Scotland is a nation of cat lovers, with 20 per cent of households owning one, so their welfare is important to a huge number of people.

“While Scotland already has some strong legislation in place to protect cats, there is always more that can be done. “

Ms Haughey added: “As a cat owner myself, I was delighted to meet with Cats Protection to hear about their work across Scotland.

“Having used their website recently, I highly recommend checking it if you own or looking to own a cat as it has a wealth of helpful information.

“Cats Protection do a fantastic job promoting the welfare of cats, supporting rehoming, and educating cat owners about how to best look after their pets.”
