Castle Douglas Scout Group appeals for new volunteers

Castle Douglas Scout Group is looking for new volunteers.

The group has provided a wide range of activities to the children and young people of the town and the surrounding area for more than 100 years.

There are currently 16 Beavers, aged from six to eight, and 24 Scouts, aged from 11 to 16, with a waiting list for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts stretching to more than 50 names.

The group, which relies on adults to volunteer time and skills, has been unable to restart the Cubs, for eight to 11 years.

At the moment there are just two adults at Scouts and one at Beavers, making it difficult to provides spaces for all the children who want to attend.

As a result, a number of them will miss out on the valuable and fun activities on offer, including arts and crafts, cooking, games and sports as well as outdoor activities like den building, cooking on fires, camping and hiking.

All of these help children to develop confidence in themselves, make friends and learn new skills and interests.

The group is looking for interested adults to help provide activities for Beavers and Cubs, in particular.

They would welcome interest from adults who can help regularly as well as adults who could help with individual badge work.

Training and support is available and anyone who is interested can contact the group leader for an informal chat.

This can be done through the Castle Douglas Scout Group Facebook page or by emailing Allison Tyson at a1tyson@icloud.com
